b) Now let’s discuss aviation safety issues (6 min).
- Describe the procedure a passenger passes before boarding the airplane.
- Do you think this procedure is sufficient to provide for the safety of passengers? Why?
- What were the changes in aviation security after 9/11?
- How do you understand aviation safety?
3. LANGUAGE TASKS (18 min)
a) Audio – Aviation English (5 min)
Now you will listen to a text. You are allowed to take notes. After you have listened to the text, you will be asked several questions. You will listen to the text twice. Do you understand? Listen
• What procedure was carried out before take-off clearance? Why?
• What was the reason for increasing power on the taxiway to 45 per cent?
• What happened during the take-off roll?
• What were pilot’s actions to stop the plane?
• Did they use reverse thrust? Why?
• What kind of damage did the aircraft sustain?
• What else did you understand?
b) Audio – Radiotelephony (5 min)
Now you are going to listen to another recording. You are allowed to take notes. You will listen to the recording twice. After you have listened to the tape, you will be asked several questions. Do you understand? The call sign is 7547. Listen.
Now please answer my questions:
• What was the pilot’s request?
• Did the controller understand the pilot immediately?
• What did the pilot need that information for?
• Did he get an answer?
• What else did you understand?
a) Simulation Task (8 min)
Imagine you are a friend of mine, and you are meeting me at Montreal after a flight from Oslo, Norway. After greetings I tell you that while overflying Iceland we saw an eruption of a volcano. Ask me questions and try to find out as much information as possible. Remember all my answers, as later you will tell this story back to me.
